TERRITORY
Puerto Rico is a rectangular island, 100 miles long by 35
miles wide. It has 78 towns or municipalities including Vieques
and Culebra, small islands off the east coast of the main
land.
CLIMATE
Puerto Rico has a summer like climate all year round with
an average temperature of 80ºF (25ºC). The southern
coast is dryer and hoter than the north. In the mountains
the climate is cooler and tropical showers are common.
LANGUAGE
The official language is spanish of all Puerto Ricans. Yet,
most of them can communicate in english, which is taught from
grade school to high school.
CULTURE
Puerto Rican culture is the result of 500 years of interaction
and blending. Taino Indians, Spaniards and Africans brought
together the best of each of their heritage and thus, a new
rich and diverse cultures was born. In Puerto Rico you will
find yourself enjoying Spanish cuisine in a town with an Indian
name, while the African rhythm of “salsa” fills
the air.
CURRENCY
Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth of the United States, as such,
it has a common currency. All economic and commercial transactions
are held in american (US) dollars. Major credit cards are
widely accepted. most major american banks have offices on
the island as well as ATM’s.
IMMIGRATION
AND CUSTOMS
The laws that govern customs and immigration are those of
the United States. Puerto Rico is a US territory since 1898
and thus subject to the same laws and restrictions as any
of the 50 states. Visitors coming from any mainland port,
do not have to go thru customs or immigration. Foreign visitors
must contact the US Embassy in their country to inquire about
visas or any other restrictions.
